The heavy winds last week have wreaked havoc on the trees of the Central Coast of NSW. I have spent many days assessing hazardous trees and cleaning up fallen ones. 9 out of 10 trees I inspected had structural defects. By this I mean faults or weak points in the tree, such as hollows and splits. (Click here for more information on tree defects).
Of the 10 most common tree defects, I can attribute 80% of tree failures in storms to one common structural fault – included branch unions, particularly at co-dominant stems. This occurs where two tree stems grow close together, where the bark between the branches becomes included. It forms a split between the two trunks, and as the stems grow, so does the split, and the stems push each other apart as they grow.
Here is an image below of a horrifying example at Killcare on the Central Coast NSW.

How do I know if my trees are safe?
Have your trees inspected once – just once is all it takes. Then have them checked every few years or after severe weather events like last week. Choose a qualified and experienced climbing arborist, one who can do an aerial inspection, by climbing into the canopy and checking the tree for unseen defects.
We offer aerial tree inspections as part of our service. If you would like to arrange an appointment please contact us here on this link – book an aerial tree inspection.
