Tree Removal – How Much Does it Cost?

Tree Removal – How Much Does it Cost?

Many factors will influence the quote you are given to remove a tree. The primary factors that we will consider are the size of the tree, the location and the risk to our arborists in removing the tree.

As a resident on the Central Coast, you can budget between $300 to remove a small tree, up to $10,000 for a large tree. On average, tree removal costs come in at $2,000.

While tree species aren’t a factor in the cost, the risk posed to our arborists performing their duties is. So, removing a palm tree will cost the same as removing a gumtree, for example.

Let’s take a closer look at two factors that will affect your quote if you want to inquire about tree removal costs.

How Location Affects Tree Removal Costs

When we assess the tree you want to have removed, we will look closely at where it is located and how this affects our access to it. If it’s located in a backyard, it will be more difficult for us to position our trucks and chippers. This may mean it needs to be manually handled to the street or lifted using machinery. Because it is located at the back of a property, it will require more time for our team to walk backwards and forwards between the tree and our machinery, which will add time, and therefore costs to the quote.

Note that using a crane won’t add to the tree removal cost. We use this machinery because it is more efficient and safer, and a cleaner way of removing a tree. A job that may take two days to complete manually could be achieved in a few hours using a crane.

How Safety Affects Tree Removal Costs

If there are power lines close to a tree we are removing, we will also factor this into the quote. We would need to get the power lines shut or taken down or use cherry pickers or cranes to perform the work.

On this note, we often get asked if an insurance company will pay for removing trees.

Unfortunately, they will only pay when a tree has caused damage or an accident. There are no grants for dangerous trees. Property owners need to pay for it.

Getting a Quote: What You Need to Know

When we meet with you to inspect the work you want to be done, we will ask you what you want to achieve and what the priorities are. As a result of our tree inspection, we may recommend tree pruning the tree rather than remove it. We will inspect the tree to check if it’s healthy and safe and assess based on our finding. We will then email you a quote and advise whether or not council approval is needed.

In preparing a quote, we will work with an hourly rate based on the crew, truck and equipment needed to remove a particular tree.

These are some of the additional factors that we take into account when preparing a quote:

  • The size of a tree – taking the tree waste of a large tree can lead to a charge of up to $1,000 or more in taxes. Most contractors will bill separately for waste removal.
  • The integrity of the tree
  • The shape of the tree, a wide tree is more difficult to remove than a tall vertical tree.
  • Powerlines and high voltage. Powerlines will certainly increase the cost due to the extra control methods that need to be employed to do the job safely.
  • Additional services – stump removal, stump grinding or garden clean up are quoted separately.
  • Council regulations – tree removal costs may differ by area due to regulations or how close your home or office is to other buildings.
  • Council costs – you will need to get permission to remove the tree, and there are fees associated with this.
  • Replacement trees – many councils require you to plant one or more trees to replace the felled one to replenish the loss to the environment.

How We Can Help

The cost of removing a tree comes down to time and safety. There is such a huge potential for disaster when working with trees, property and people. No shortcuts can be taken when people’s lives are at risk. Please take this into consideration before you employ a tree worker or arborist to prune or remove your tree. Ask them to explain their work method and make sure you are comfortable with their attitude towards safety.

If you have a tree on your property that you want to be removed, call us for a tree inspection. We will come out and assess the tree’s health, determine its safety, and supply you with a quote based on our findings.
