Trees are what makes a suburban place nice to live in. But it is a sad fact that large mature trees with cavities and hollows that are homes to birds and other wildlife, are also a hazard for people who live in houses under them.

It is a compromise between having a property that is leafy and green and also one that is safe to live in.

If you look at pictures of the Central Coast or Sydney from 50 -70 years ago, you will see that in many places there are more trees now than there were back then. This is because much of the land was logged up until the 1930’s and then used for farming and food production. So not many trees in urban areas are older than 80 years..

Saving trees is great, but I find that many of the people who complain about trees being removed, don’t actually have any large hazardous trees overhanging their property, some don’t even have any real trees at all.

Here are some images of a recent tree removal in Terrigal on the NSW Central Coast,  as an example of removing a mature tree in favor of a safer place to live in. And of course, this tree was replaced with 2 native trees of a smaller variety.
